Game of Thrones season 8 episode 6 – my review

Game of Thrones is the most popular series of the 21st century, which has become a cultural phenomenon. Finally, the expected end of this story has come. Is it satisfying?

Game of Thrones has divided audiences around the world in the 8th season. Emotional reactions went from extremes to extremes. It is difficult for many of us to simply take a deep breath, take a step back and look at it from a distance. Should we attack the duo: DB Weiss and David Benioff for the decisions taken in the 8th season? I do not think, because they are still the same people who created all series – the better and the worse. The argument about having a book by George RR Martin does not change anything, because people without skills and visions will not make a good movie or series based on a novel. We have seen this many times in the cinema with different titles. However, I think that we all have the right to express disapproval for the various decisions taken this season, which have not always been consistent with the spirit of the Game of Thrones. For me it will be the destruction of the most attractive story of the Night King by the fatal third episode, for others it will be a question of burning the King’s Landing in the 5th episode. After the final, I start to think that the groups that have so far clashed in verbal fencing will now face one side of the barricade.

Daenerys Targaryen is not crazy, but she is not a kind queen, for which she considers herself. This episode only confirms what we learned throughout the series. Her nature has nothing to do with being a ruler, because she has always been brought up as a conqueror. Impulsive, submissive, cruel and ruthless. We have often seen these features, just as we have often heard about the fact that she would burn cities full of innocents only because of the support of her opponents. Her explanation of the decision of the 5th episode confirms my assumption that there is no madness in it, it is just a bad or even stupid assessment of the situation. However, everything is well connected and when we look at the past calmly, we can see coherence and sense. However, the creators were not tempted to somehow expand and justify its behavior, minimizing everything to generalities. There were not many important words that should feed, and emotions that should be built. It does not matter in the context of the assessment of the 5th episode as one of the best in terms of implementation and rather it does not change anything in the already established positions of all viewers. For me it does not spoil understanding of Daenerys’s decision, but at the same time I see sloppiness and exaggerated shortness, which should not take place at that moment. Whoever recognizes that the burning of King’s Landing did not have fictional attitudes, this episode might even strengthen such beliefs.

The entire Daenerys stage in the room with – surprisingly – still existing Iron Throne is climatic. Every fan of Daenerys, to which I also belong, for a moment can feel what he has been waiting for from the beginning. Even the massacre did not change particularly sympathy with the characters and expectations built up over the years. However, the creators do not make it easier for viewers to understand their vision and this also translates into the fate of Daenerys. Her death scene is simply … kitsch. This is a word that I would never like to use in the context of the TV series Game of Thrones and it’s hard for me to recall a scene that deserves nothing. Cersei’s criticized death at least had some symbolism and poetry that matched the climate of the series. I can not say the same about saying goodbye to Daenerys. It was shot hastily, sloppily, without any idea or drama. And worst of all – completely unemotional at a crucial moment. I am not able to accept the fact that Daenerys was alone with Jon. After all, literally an episode had previously spoken about Jon: the traitor and despite her feelings for him, she was aware that she was the biggest threat to her. No matter if he would like this power or not. Therefore, Daenerys’s obvious death at the hands of Jon is the easiest in the world carried out in a stupid and naive way. In this case, Benioff and Weiss in the roles of the directors suffered a miserable failure, giving death empty like marking a hook on the list of formalities. The shock for me is the fact that moments later we get something beautiful in the style of the show. After Daenerys’s death, Drogon appears in the climate scene of the Iron Throne burning. Symbolic (lust for power the cause of death) and moving at the same time, considering how the dragon reacts to the death of his mother. In those moments there were the only emotions associated with Daenerys, which creators could afford. The irony of this series is that in the finale it is provided by a character created by computer effects … and not expressive charismatic heroes built by the creators for years. Still, there is a rasp in it, meaning Drogon does not kill Jon. We can here figure out the reasons led by the Dragon’s consciousness that it is Targaryen, but is this really justification? I głównie o to mi chodziło. The creators went on the easy way and were not able to justify it sensibly.

Tyrion is probably the best character of the series and this finale in every respect. I am glad that it is his thread that becomes the most important and best played. It is in his history that there are emotional scenes (finding the corpse of Cersei and Jaime, a walk in the burned city) and in a way sad when it rebelling against Daenerys in a public way. At the very end, Peter Dinklage once again confirmed his class, which he presented many times in this series. I am glad, therefore, that he also plays a key role in the election of a new king. To tell the truth, the character of Tyrion is the only element of the final, to which I have no objections. His fate may leave with satisfaction and a feeling of relief.

Just as Tyrion is the best character of Game of Thrones, Jon Snow is the worst. Kit Harington is doing terribly in the climactic scenes, looking at everything with sad eyes and … all in all. One can not see in it a game, expression, emotions or anything that would give his theme emotional authenticity, which is so important that we believe in something. So we are to understand that Jon was resurrected to kill Daenerys? It sounds quite bizarre and, to tell the truth, it’s ridiculous. God of Light knew of one threat, which is the Night King, and we all thought he brought him back to life. When the creators disregarded this thread built for years, ending it in a way that separates audiences, it’s hard for me to accept that it really was about Dany. It is difficult to see any sense in this. The worst and best thing in his story was the meeting with … Spirit. After the 4th episode, the director persuaded in interviews that they did not show goodbye to the wolf, because they did not have a budget, which for a series with such costs sounds bizarre and ridiculous. How do we treat these explanations now that Jon caressed the Spirit? This is at least a weird decision, but certainly satisfying for the wolf fan.

Game of Thrones has created a specific convention, which forces me and many fans to make a simple conclusion: this series can not end happily. It can not be a happy end. Is it possible to say that giving viewers sweetened to the borders the opportunity to end up like a fairy tale for children fits with the Game of thrones? Is this the opposite to expectations? Absolutely not. This is a lack of understanding of what the foundation of the series was and how it came out to meet expectations over the years, crushed them and surprised them. Ending with shots on the flowing Arya (a character terribly wasted in this episode …) for the coronation of Sansa (it makes sense, so he recognizes this thread as a plus) and Jon Snow driving the Wall (either rebuilt it or the creators showed a strange generalization …) and meetings of the Little Council are more like the Chronicles of Narnia than the Game of the Throne. Something that does not evoke negative emotions in itself, because why would it? These scenes do something much worse … they build total indifference and disgust. The series, which always showed courage and risk, this time showed us something boring and safe. There is no such courage and this courage to make a decision, building in the viewer the impression that these years with the show were worth it.

Bran Stark is the most useless character of this season. Many times one could see such definitions of his role in history and even in the conflict with the Night King. Establishing him with a king arouses gentle mixed feelings. On the one hand, this makes sense in terms of the form of choice (a substitute for democracy destroying the circle in accordance with Daenerys’s vision) and the character of the character. On the other hand, this is the most boring choice, which – once again I say – does not give satisfaction. We’ve been watching this series for years, following the title Game of Thrones to see who will win it. Embedding Bran on the throne is somehow inscribed in the climate of the series and its perversity, but at the same time you can feel cheated, because … for years, we support characters in achieving success, not even a substitute for emotional fulfillment and satisfaction. The Little Council of Heroes, who fit so well and seem totally out of place, looks better.

Game of Thrones gets a bad final episode. As the previous ones evoked extreme emotions in viewers, this one seems to be strangely empty. I feel sadness and disappointment, but closer to my indifference after the screening, than irritation with the decisions of the creators headed by the killing of Daenerys. If the finale of the most popular series in the world only causes indifference, the creators have suffered a spectacular failure. In the case of the 8th season created two years, the problem turned out to be bad implementation. Even in the last episode outside Drogon, the scene with the CGI background was astonishing with artificiality and underdevelopment. It’s about the initial sequences with Daenerys’s army, where during the close-ups on Jon we saw that the background does not match the character. The series did not make such mistakes so often.

Game of Thrones ends and leaves many questions to be answered: Has the season destroyed the heritage and legend of the series? You have to think about it because I do not see the point in the moment being hot and under the influence of emotions in making judgments. However, I have no illusions that the 8th season made a lot of mistakes. It will be difficult to excite yourself with the thread of the Night King, which in this series was treated simply disrespectfully and neglectfully. It will be difficult to excite yourself with the development of Daenerys (and noticing the signs contributing to the decision of the 5th episode), when we will have in mind how its topic ends in a punishable way. David Benioff and DB Weiss in the case of the final episode suffered a failure as artists not because the script was underdeveloped, or that they made bad and weird decisions for the plot. They failed, because they clearly lost their heart and enthusiasm, which gave us the most popular series in the world. The effect of this is making decisions along the line of the least resistance. Only disgust remains, because Game of Thrones deserves better and above all worthy end of his legend.
